Jimmy "Jim" D. Smith

Jimmy “Jim” D. Smith age 70 of Menomonie, died Thursday July 23, 2015 at The Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie.

Jim was born August 7, 1944 on a farm in northern Dunn County.  He was the son of Robert and Delora (Knutson) Smith.  As a young child he moved with his family to Menomonie.  Jim graduated from Menomonie High School in 1962.  Jim served in the U.S Navy and was honorably discharged.  Returning to Menomonie, he hauled milk with his father for a few years.  Jim then drove truck for Bob Dotseth Trucking in Knapp.  In 1968 he met and married Colleen Dawson July 27, 1968 in North St. Paul, MN.  After marriage they moved to Menomonie and raised their family.  Jim will be notably remembered from working car sales with various automobile dealers in the Menomonie area.

Jim enjoyed deer hunting, golfing, playing softball in his younger years, playing in various pool leagues.  He was active in Menomonie Youth Hockey and was an assistant coach for several years. He also enjoyed watching Packer and Badger football games.  Mostly Jim enjoyed relaxing on the patio with the barbeque and having a beer with family and friends.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Lori (Jeff) Geissler of Chippewa Falls; three grandsons, Drew (Megan) Wieser of Ewardsville, IL, Gentry Geissler of Eau Claire, Finnegan Smith of Savage, MN; a granddaughter, Piper Smith of Savage, MN; a great grandson, AJ Wieser of Edwardsville, a great granddaughter Brooke Wieser of Edwardsville, IL; a daughter-in-law, Kiernan Smith of Savage, MN; a sister Mary Ann (Keith) Jensen of Chetek; three brothers, Jerry Smith of Kadoka, SD, Bill (Barb) Smith of Middleton, Randy Smith of Rice Lake; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends

He is preceded in death by his parents, loving wife Colleen December 16, 2014, a beloved son Rob September 25, 2012 and two brothers, Richard and Tommy Smith.

The family would like to thank Dr. Nathan Rich and the staff of The Neighbors of Dunn County for the wonderful care given to Jim.

Memorial services will be 1:00 PM Wednesday July 29, 2015 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Menomonie with Pastor Mary Anne Conklin officiating.  Burial will be in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in Spooner at a later date.

Visitation will be from 11:00 AM Wednesday until the time of the services at the funeral home.

    I'm so sorry Lori, I will always remember what a great uncle he was to me, your dad helped me learn many things about life, hope I can honor him in my life. With my deepest condolences I regret not being able to be with you at his funeral. I do plan to attend the memorial service so please keep me in the loop.
