Darlene M. Dettling

Darlene M. Dettling, age 87 of Plum City, died Sunday, September 20, 2015 at the Plum City Care Center in Plum City with her family by her side.

Darlene was born on April 25, 1928 in Ruthven, IA. She was the daughter of Oliver and Edna (Myers) Lee. Darlene grew up in Ruthven and graduated from the Ruthven High School in 1945. After high school, Darlene worked at Wigdahl’s Hardware Store in Ruthven for several years before moving to the Twin Cities to work as an X-ray technician.  Darlene married James Dettling on May 21, 1956 in Ruthven, IA. After marriage, they moved to Plum City where together, Darlene and James farmed and raised their family. In 1996 their son, Joe bought the farm and Darlene and James continued to live on and help out.

Darlene enjoyed sewing, traveling, gardening and baking. She was an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church and PCCW.  Darlene was the leader of the ladies group for the Pierce County Farm Bureau for many years. Most of all, Darlene loved spending time with family and friends. 

Darlene is survived by her husband of 59 years, James, four children; Cindy (Scott) Truttmann of Hager City, Jim of Ellsworth, Steve (Dorene) of Welch, MN and Joe of Plum City, two grandchildren; Kyle and Alaina, one great grandson; Carson, one sister; Marie Robertson of Hampton, IA, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, one sister; LauRene Olberding, three brothers; Leonard Lee, Laurence Lee and Eldon “Curly” Lee.

Memorial Mass will be 11:00 AM Saturday, September 26, 2015 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plum City. Fr. Paul G. Czerwonka will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Friday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

    Dear Jim and Family, Marcia just called me and told me the sad news. You all have my sympathy and prayers. Lots of memory lanes to remember and good times had by all being next door neighbors and friends. Darlene Mom and Dad can rest and enjoy there time now in peace and happiness. Will remember her always and forever. Cindy, I know we missed each other at my dad's funeral cause I was in Hawaii. If you like, email me and we can chat about the old days,,,,, like when I would come up and help milk the cows when your folks would go on Vacation. Again My sympathy and prayers to the family.

    Jim & family: Please know that you are all in my thoughts and prayers. I have good memories of Darlene and I know my mom/dad welcome her in heaven. I can still see you and Darlene sitting behind mom and I at mass on Saturday evenings when I came home!
