Evelyn N. Weiss

Evelyn N. Weiss

Evelyn N. Weiss age 99 of Menomonie, formerly of Mondovi, died Wednesday, September 7, 2016, at The Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie. Her passing left her family and friends with many memories of a wonderful woman who led an exemplary life.

Evelyn was born February 27, 1917, in Gilmanton, Buffalo County.  She was the daughter of William and Gladys Hazel (Brotzman) Deetz. After her mother suddenly passed away at age 38, Evelyn was left with managing household duties for a family of six at age 15. Evelyn dedicated herself to graduating from Gilmanton High School in 1934 and aspired to become a teacher, graduating from Buffalo County Normal School in 1936. She taught school at Oak Grove in rural Gilmanton, a school she attended earlier in life. Evelyn met and married Herman Weiss of Mondovi on August 11, 1937. They settled in the Mondovi area where she was first a housewife and later became involved in the grocery business in Mondovi with her husband, Herman. The business known as “Herb’s Super Foods” was a staple provider of groceries and meats in the local area. Evelyn and Herman had four children, Carol, Judy, Franklin and Terry, all of whom helped out in the family business while growing up.

Evelyn was a person who gave to others much more that she received, true to Biblical teaching. She and Herman opened their home to relatives who needed support. Her father, William lived under Evelyn and Herman’s care for many years after an accident left him with no vision.

Evelyn was very active and held several offices in her church, Sacred Heart in Mondovi and was devoted to God and Jesus Christ. Her spiritual presence served as an inspiration to her family and friends. Evelyn enjoyed preparing food for family and friends, always having a surprise desert. She was an avid card player who had a great memory for all the cards in the game. In later years when she was largely confined to her home because of health limitations, she demonstrated great courage, perseverance and patience. She loved her family and friends dearly and built her life on love and charity to others.

Left as a legacy in survivorship are her children; Carol (Gerald) Deetz of Owatonna, MN, Judy (Joe) Jax of Menomonie and Franklin (Sharon) Sun Lakes, AZ, daughter-in-law; Leslie Weiss of Round Rock, TX, nine grandchildren; Steve (Julia), Tom (Anne), John, Michael (Stefanie), Cory (Crystal), Todd (Raquel), Jeremy (Mayra), Megan (Chris) and Michelle, 17 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Herman, son; Terry, four brothers; Russell, Howard, Lincoln, Lyle and Donald Deetz and one sister; Myrtle McGuire.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 12, 2016 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Menomonie with Rev. James Kurzynski officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Mondovi at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

Memorials may be made in Evelyn’s name to American Heart Association, St. Joseph Parish in Menomonie, or Sacred Heart Parish in Mondovi.

Rhiel Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Menomonie, is serving the family.

I noted your Mom's obituary in the Mondovi paper.(It takes it a while to arrive in TX) and have fond memories of stopping by the store on Sunday to pick up items. I also remember your Grandfather Deetz attending the Methodist Church in Mondovi. One other observation is the placement of her obituary next to that of Clarence Aase. They were almost the same age and were born only a few miles apart. I wonder if they knew each other....
Please know I'm thinking of the entire family.

  2. Bob and Joanne Bauer

Dear Judy, Bob and I read about your mother's death in the Mondovi paper. The obituary was written so beautifully, and exemplified the beautiful lady that she was! In our first years of marriage, (it is now 55!) when we lived in Mondovi, I so enjoyed going to your family's grocery store and talking to your mom, as she was cashier and dear lady. At that time, she kept me updated on your life, as you were a student at Stout. How wonderful that we became sorority sisters! Our sympathy to you and Joe in the loss of your wonderful mom, but what dear memories you must have of her! Bob and Joanne Bauer
