Douglas C. DeLong

Douglas C. DeLong, age 75 of Elmwood, died Sunday, September 30, 2018 at his home in Elmwood with his family by his side after a courageous battle with cancer.

Doug was born on March 5, 1943 to Neil and Dorothy (Reitz) DeLong in Elmwood. He grew up in Elmwood and graduated from Elmwood High School. After high school, Doug joined the U.S. Army, served stateside at Fr. Carson, CO. and was Honorably Discharged. Doug married Lorraine Anderson on December 31, 1965 in Ellsworth. After marriage, they lived in Elmwood where Doug worked at the Pierce County Highway Department and raised his family. He worked for the highway department for over 20 years before retiring. Doug was a member of Gilman Lutheran Church and was currently serving as a council member and on the cemetery board. He belonged and served on the board of the Pierce County chapter of the Northwest Turkey Federation (NWTF). Doug was also member of the Crain-Ottman American Legion Post #207 in Elmwood.

Doug enjoyed hunting, fishing, sapping, bowling, golfing, playing cards and shaking dice with his coffee group in Elmwood. He liked to watch and play all sports, from playing softball to watching the Packers on TV. Doug took many fishing trips to Alaska where he spent his days catching salmon, halibut and digging up clams on the beach with his friends. He was well known for his family and church fish fries.

Doug is survived by his wife of 53 years; Lorraine, children; Cheri (Chris) Jacobson of Spring Valley, Curt (Dawn) of Elmwood, grandchildren; Casey (Nick), Brooke (Lance), Jade, Abby and Maddie, one brother; Roger of River Falls, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, twin sisters in infancy and one brother in infancy.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the Gilman Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with Rev. Peter Friberg will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors by the Crain-Ottman American Legion Post #207. Visitation will be Wednesday 4:00PM-8:00PM at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Elmwood and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
