Lawrence M. Smith age 88 of Menomonie,

Died: Sunday March 2, 2008 at the Spring Valley Health Care Center in Spring Valley.

Lawrence was born November 30, 1919 in the Township of Weston, Dunn County, to John and Grace (Clayson) Smith. Lawrence attended Hay Creek country school and began working on farms in the area. He later worked in Minnesota on a thrashing crew near the end of the Great Depression. Lawrence married Marcella May Holmstadt on October 23, 1945 in Durand, WI. They worked on several farms until they purchased their farm in the Townships of Dunn and Weston in 1950. Lawrence worked as a dairy farmer and butcher for many years. Together Lawrence and Marcella raised six children, five boys and on girl. Frank, Arlan, Joseph, Daniel, Dennis and Mary. He enjoyed farming, fishing and playing cards with family and friends. They were members of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Menomonie.

Lawrence is survived by four sons, Frank, Daniel (Eva); and Dennis (Jill), all of Menomonie; Arlan (Becky) of Elmwood; one daughter, Mary Smith of Menomonie; 11 grandchildren; Jodi, Niki, & Ryan Smith; Leslie “Pete”, Jeremy, Christy and Michael Smith; Danika, Smith, Travis, Brandon, and Derek Smith, and seven great grandchildren; a sister, Lila Linder of Arizona.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Marcella in 1982; a son Joseph in infancy; three brothers, Gerald, Ronald & Lyle; two sisters, Grace Good and Celia Robelia.
