Marie B. King, age 86 of Durand, died Saturday, September 07, 2013 at the Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand with her family by her side.

Marie was born on November 16, 1926 at home in rural Pepin County. She was the daughter of Ray and Agnes (Thompson) Coaty. Marie grew up in the Durand area and graduated from Durand High School in 1944. After high school Marie married Harvey Vincent King on September 24, 1945 at St. John’s Church in Plum City. Marie worked various jobs in the area including, the egg station, the Holiday Station, where she was known as “Ma Holiday.” She also worked at the Pepin County office of aging and also for the Clerk of Court office. Marie finally retired from all of her jobs in 1999. For the last 2 years, Marie has lived in the Homeplace of Durand.

Marie served on the Durand City Council for 2 terms. She also was the recipient of several awards; The Age-less Hero Award from the State of Wisconsin, Serving on the board for the Coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups and for 10 Perfect Seasons as a Forensic Coach at St. Mary’s Catholic School in Durand. Marie loved to cook, make lefse, do embroidery, play cards and do crossword puzzles. She was an avid fan of all the Wisconsin sports teams as well as watching her grandchildren play sports. Marie was a certified Toastmaster. She had a great devotion to her faith and was an active member of St. Mary’s in Durand.

Marie is survived by her children; DeeDee (Bob) Schutz of Hager City, Delores (Pete) Schwartz of Durand, Rose Marie (Neil) Bruce of Red Wing, MN, Monica (Dallas) Heitman and Susan Hurt, both of Durand, Liz (Marty) Drake of Wauwatosa, Bob (Becky Drake) King of Mondovi, Anita (Bruce) Haskins of Rock Falls, Rick (Lisa) King of Sussex and Kathy (Bruce) Holmstadt of Durand, 24 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, one sister-in-law; Micki Coaty of La Crosse, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband; Harvey King, one daughter; Rebecca Marie King, three grandchildren; Rebecca Schutz, Angela Schutz and Darcie Rae Heitman, two grandsons; John Schutz and Tanner Bystrom, two brothers; LeRoy and Richard Coaty and one sister; Arline Coulson.
