Roy L Doughty

Roy L. Doughty, age 95 of Arkansaw, died Monday, June 30, 2014 at the Oakview Care Center in Durand with his family by his side.

Roy was born on June 22, 1919 in the Arkansaw area. He was the son of Ralph and Rose (Schwartz) Doughty. Roy grew up in the Arkansaw area and graduated from Arkansaw High School. After high school, Roy joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. (CCC) where he helped build many of the parks and trails in the area. Roy married Algie Wheeler on June 22, 1940 in Iowa. They started their lives together in the Twin Cities, where Roy worked as a Bell Hop in the Curtiss Hotel. They lived in Pepin County area and operated small dairy farms. In 1990 they moved from Dead Lake Prairie to the Village of Arkansaw, where they resided until November of 2009 when they relocated to the Oakview Care Center. He operating a greenhouse, produce gardens and various other jobs to support his family. Roy was a hard worker in sheet metal construction and proud of the fact he was a certified nuclear power plant welder working on jobs in Alaska, Greenland and US Air Force Academy Chapel.

Roy was a woodworker and spent many hours in his woodshop making clothes racks, rocking chairs and various bird houses, etc. When he was in the shop or his large garden, his cats were his constant companions. He spent many hours at the Arkansaw Methodist Church making hundreds of prized apple pies for the annual church sales and assisting in various jobs around the church. Roy was the sexton of the Arkansaw Cemetery and with Algie worked many years caring for the grounds there.

Roy is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 71 years, Algie, son Robert, granddaughters, Miccayla Rose Doughty and Summer Faye Doughty, sisters, Rhetta Wilund and Ruby Mosiman and brother, Galen Doughty.

Roy is survived by his children; Dallas (Judith) of Arkansaw, Audrey (William) Haverstock of Shakopee, MN, Norma (Steve Howarth) Bilderback of Eau Claire, Dennis of Chippewa Falls, Emmet (Barbara) of Hager City, Gayle (Warren) Schmitt of North Branch, MN, John of Arkansaw, Dana Luther of Durand and Jeff (Dayna) of Arkansaw. He is also survived by his sister, Meriea Carlton of Green Bay, 19 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at a future date.
