Herbert E. "Herb" Metcalf Jr.

Herbert E. “Herb” Metcalf Jr., age 72 of Maiden Rock, died Sunday, November 23, 2014 at his home in Maiden Rock.

Herb was born on January 31, 1942 in Plum City. He was the son of Herbert E. and Rose (Gilles) Metcalf Sr. Herb grew up in Plum City and graduated from Plum City High School. He bought his first farm after high school and farmed with his Uncle Tom Sundberg for seven years. Herb married Dorothy Shaw on February 4, 1967 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Plum City. After marriage, they continued to farm and raise their family. Herb farmed all of his life in the Plum City area.

Herb and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and fishing. He liked spending time at a cabin in northern Minnesota. Most of all, Herb loved to spend time with family and friends.

Herb is survived by his wife of 47 years; Dorothy, two children; Steve and Leila (Andy) Wieser, both of Plum City, four grandchildren; Drew (Megan), Cody, Raquel and Alyssa, one great grandson; AJ and one great grandchild on the way, one sister; LaRose Priess of Red Wing, MN, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters; Maxine Eccles and Elaine McCleary.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM Friday, November 28, 2014 at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand. Pastor Karna Marks will officiate. Burial will be in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:30 AM until the time of services at the funeral home on Friday.

    Herb was my teacher and friend to me and I owe my way of a farming life style to herb in the dairy industry that guy was the nicest and a sad day to his passing to god he will be farming for god now.

    Kent and I are so sorry to loose a great friend and uncle. Many great memories of him taking Diane to her first dance. Ice skating together, farming with Tom and Cecelia Sundburg and washing his car. Love to all the family.
