Manley C. Smith

Manley Curtis Smith, age 94 of Knapp, died January 2, 2015 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Red Cedar in Menomonie.

Manley was born February 13, 1925 in Blue Earth Minnesota to Harvey W. and Mable (Petrie) Smith.  He grew up around and attended school at Knapp through the eighth grade and then stayed at home to farm.  Manley married Shirley V. King on May 24, 1943 and to this union five children were born; Jeanie, Eugene, Linda, Robert, Mary.  Shirley preceded him in death on February 19, 1997.

Manly had a strong work ethic, and through the years was employed as a farmer, bus driver for Knapp School, Chevrolet garage and Glenwood Theater at Glenwood City, Downing Creamery, Boyceville Creamery.  He received his Boiler License and then moved to Planview, MN to work in the creamery.  Manley later moved to Inver Grove Heights, MN and worked maintenance at University Hospital in St. Paul, MN until his retirement in March of 1987.  He and Shirley then moved back to Boyceville.  After his wife’s death he has lived with his special friend Celia Dresser for the last few years in Knapp.

Manly was an avid reader, hunter and fisherman.  Many a Thanksgiving dinner was late due to deer hunting.  He taught his children to hunt and fish and to clean their own fish.

Manley is survived by his children, Eugene (Sheri) Smith of Arbor Vista, Linda (Raymond) Studer of Charles City, IA, Robert Smith of Elk Mound, Mary Merts of Paynesville, MN; grandchildren, Deanna (Tom) Wagner of Phoenix, AZ, Cynthia (Kendall) Cordes of Nashua, IA, Jeremey Kampa of North Carolina, Thomas Studer of Charles City, IA, Curtis (Julie) Smith of MaChesney Park, IL, April (Jesse) Ploof of Angora, MN; Cory Smith of Canada, Kimberly (Eric) Hanson of Delavan, Michelle (Adam) Puncocher of Maple Lake MN; Randall Studer of Olewein, IA, Melllisa Wood of Minnesota, Harvey Smith of Elk Mound; 15 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren.  He will also be sadly missed by his special friend, Celia Dresser; sisters-in-law, Helen Jeske of Glenwood City, Edith Barr of Mount Juliet, TN; brothers-in-law, Richard King of Glenwood City, Glen King of Fort Worth, TX, plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, daughter, Jeanie, and a grandson Duston Smith.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday May 16, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Knapp with Rev. Paul Foulke officiating.  Burial will be in the Forest Hill Cemetery at Knapp.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
