William W. Simmons

William W. Simmons, age 102, of Menomonie, passed away on Friday, March 6, at the Neighbors of Dunn County in Menomonie.

William was born on December 6, 1912 in the Town of Menomonie to Thomas and Inga (Engen) Simmons. He married Inez Knopps on January 30, 1937. They were married for 75 years and were lifelong residents of Menomonie.

William's long career in education began in 1934, teaching in rural schools in Dunn County. He graduated with a two year diploma from the Dunn County Normal School in 1933, earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from UW-Eau Claire; a Master of Science Degree in Guidance and Counseling and the additional School Psychologist certification from UW-Stout. He was an elementary teacher, principal, guidance counselor and school psychologist in the Menomonie Schools. In recognition of his service, in 1976 he was named "Teacher of the Year".

His retirement years were spent working in his woodshop, camping, and hunting and fishing with the family at their property near Minong.

William is survived by his three children, William (Clarice)Simmons, Joan Hughes, Teresa (Gary) Schoenborn; grandchildren, Thomas Simmons, Mary Beth (Jeff) Sand, John Simmons, Charles (Jacquelin) Hughes, Daniel (Jonda) Hughes; great grandchildren, Marcus (Ashley) Sand, Alizabeth Sand, Branigan (Jordan) Nilssen, and Carter, Camron & Caileen Hughes, Samuel and Maxwell Hughes, and great great grandchildren Weston and Payson Nilssen. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez, and son-in-law Wayne Hughes, three brothers and one sister.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held 11:00 AM Saturday March 14, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Menomonie with Rev. John Mano officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to mass. Burial will be in the St. Joseph's cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Neighbors of Dunn County for the wonderful care Bill received during his time there.
