Helen H. Callan

Helen H. Callan age 100 died Sunday September 27, 2015 at the Plum City Care Center in Plum City.

Helen was born August 22, 1915 in Marshfield WI to Ed and Margaret (Karau) Krause and grew up in the Marshfield area.  Helen worked for the Montgomery Wards store in Marshfield.  She met William M. Callan, who was working for Gambles Store in Wisconsin Rapids, and they were married January 27, 1940 in Marshfield.  After marriage they moved to Chippewa Falls where Bill managed the Gambles Store.  In 1945, they moved to Durand where they purchased the Gambles Store.  They sold the Gambles hardware line in 1968 and retained the Skogmos soft line and the RCA TV dealership.  After Bill’s death in 1994, Helen continued to operate the business with her son Dan until they closed the business.

Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Rosary & Alter Society.  She was also a member of the Durand and Eau Claire Women’s Club.  She was a Past President of the Ninth District of the Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Helen is survived by her son, Dan Callan of Durand; a granddaughter, Erin (Kevin) Crisson of Bethesda, MD; a great grandson, Robert William Crisson of Bethesda, MD; a grandson, Jacob Callan of Eau Claire; a foster son, J. Patrick (Jane) Brunker of Las Vegas, NV;  special friend, Jean Hooker of Durand, several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Bill, three sisters, Margaret, Adela and an infant sister; two brothers, Adolph and Edward.

Funeral Mass will be 11:30 AM Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Durand with Rev. Paul Bosco officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 PM Monday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
