Lucille D Mittelstadt

Lucille (Herrington) Mittelstadt age 85 of Knapp,

Died: Wednesday October 1, 2008 at her home in the Township of Stanton, rural Knapp.

Lucille Da Vona (Herrington) Mittelstadt was born March 21, 1923 in a log house located at that time on 130th St., north of County Hwy. Q in the Township of Stanton, Dunn County and was baptized at the Knapp Methodist Church. She was the seventh child of Perry and Anna (Pitzrick) Herrington. Her father died when Lucille was but three months old, leaving her mother with six children to raise (one baby boy had died at birth). Everett, the oldest was but 10 years old at that time, followed by sisters, Pearl, Sylvia, Ethel, Rosellia, and Lucille.

Lucille’s mother and children moved into east Knapp, here her mother kept a cow and a few chickens. With the sale of homemade butter, some eggs, plus $30.00 a month, so called government “Widows Pension”, the family was kept together. In June of 1928, Anna Herrington married Gust Schutts and she and the children moved to the Schutts farm in rural Stanton Township. Esther, Mildred, and Lee joined the family in the years that followed.

The Herrington and Schutts children all attended the Peck School on Cty. Hwy K, to complete their eighth grade education. Lucille was the only one of the Herrington children to attend high school. For her first year in high school in Knapp, she worked for the room and board. The second year she either walked from her farm home or rode a bicycle, weather permitting. Her 11th and 12th grades were completed at Boyceville High School. School buses only traveled on the County Roads at that time. Therefore, she had to walk to Hwy K to get on the bus. Also, one had to pay a fee to ride the bus. For this charge, Lucille would correct papers for a grade school teacher. To obtain a high school education meant a lot to her!

On December 21, 1943, Lucille married Curtis Mittelstadt at the Knapp Methodist Parsonage. They lived in rural Wyoming before coming back to Knapp area where they farmed for over 47 years. Curtis, Lucille and their children enjoyed their years together on their rural Knapp acreage, all working together. When their dairy herd was sold and Curtis went into the beef cattle business, Lucille started working in Menomonie; first at the lunch counter at Schultz Bros. Store and later at the Commons at Stout State University. In April of 1985 Lucille was elected Stanton Township Clerk, the position she held until April of 2007. In April of 1996 she was elected to the Dunn County Board of Supervisors and held this position until Dec. 1, 2007.

Lucille is survived by a son, Perry (Terrie) Mittelstadt of Cedaredge, CO; two daughters, Gayle Mittelstadt of Grand Junction, CO; Dr. Jeanne Mittelstadt of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Ben (Kelli) Mittelstadt of Midland, TX; Lt. Amanda Mittelstadt with the U.S. Navy, England; Greta M. Linse Bozeman, MT; Anna Laura (Chris) Scott of Casper, WY; Emilie Schroeder of Milwaukee; Kurtis Schroeder of Eau Claire; two great

grandsons, Cole and Brandon Mittelstadt of Midland, TX; a sister Mildred Olesko of Weyerhaeuser; a brother, Lee Schutts of Wilson; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
