Dorothy S. Estes age 96 of Elmwood,
Died: Wednesday December 3, 2008 at Cloister Nursing Home in La Jolla, CA.
Dorothy was born December 12, 1912 in Elmwood, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of Frank and Vera (Doughty) Springer. Dorothy attended Elmwood High School and went on to the University of Minnesota where she earned a bachelors degree in English. She moved to California and married Robert Estes in 1943. The couple initially lived in Sacramento, CA and then moved to San Diego, CA following WWII. Dorothy worked for the San Diego Department of Education during her earlier years and as a social worker in child protective services from 1963 until she retired in 1975. She loved art and music, serving as a docent at the San Diego Museum of Art for many years after her retirement. She was an avid reader and a passionate advocate of American politics. Beyond all else, Dorothy loved her family, returning to Elmwood every summer to visit them and then living at the family home in Elmwood for more extended periods following her retirement.
Dorothy is survived by her brother, Dr. Frank Springer of Elmwood, WI; a son, Dr. James Estes of Santa Cruz, CA; and two grandchildren, Colin Estes of Santa Cruz, CA and Anna Dorothy Estes of Denver, CO.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert in 1984, and her brother Dr. Joe Springer in 1998.
A memorial service and burial will be held at the Spring Lake Church cemetery at 1PM Thursday December 18, 2008.
