James A Wittig

James A Wittig, age 92 of Durand, died Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at Beehive in Eau Claire.

Jim was born December 15, 1930 at home on the family farm in the Town of Lima, rural Durand. He was the son of Ignatz and Julia (Kainz) Wittig. His life was dedicated to farming in Lima, an Austrian settlement. He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic School in Lima. Jim joined the U.S. Army and served stateside.

At the 7th Annual La Crosse Diocesan Rural Life Day in 1988, James a member of Holy Rosary Parish, received the Century Farm Rural Life Award. Annual awards have continued for 42 years.

James’ family consisted of six brothers, seven sisters, the joy of 59 nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He is survived by his sisters Edna Fischer of Bayport, MN, Gertrude Holmstadt of Plum City, sister-in-law Mary Ann Wittig of Menomonie. He is preceded in death by his parents, five brothers Joseph (Helen), Alfred, Anthony (Wilma), Louis and Edward, five sisters Anna (Glenn) Wilson, Margaret- Sr. Mary Avila Wittig, Marie (Walter) Hayden, Helen (Robert) Stilson and Theresa Wittig, brothers-in-law, Donald Fischer and Kenneth Holmstadt.

Memorial Mass will be 12:00PM Noon Friday, July 14, 2023 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church-Lima with Rev. Emmanuel Asamoah-Bekoe officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Honors provided by the Durand American Legion Post #181 of Durand. Visitation will be held from 11:00AM until the time of services and the church on Friday.
