Doris Weiss

Doris Weiss

Doris Weiss, 98, of Durand, WI, died November 30, 2025, at the Baldwin Care Center following a lifetime of change and adventure.  Born March 4, 1927, in Moore Valley, Town of Durand, WI, she was the fifth child of Fred and Mary (Brantner) Brunner.

After graduating from Lima High School in 1945, she was employed at Doughboy Mills in New Richmond, packaging C-rations for the servicemen in WWII.  After the war, she worked for attorney William Thurston and at the Nat & Winefred Ward Insurance Agency.

She married Gilbert L. Weiss in 1948, and together they traveled and started a family while Gil was a salesman for the Wrought Iron Range Company.  In 1953 they purchased a hardware store in Alma Center, WI, where they lived until 1963 when they bought the Welch Insurance Agency in Durand and formed Gil Weiss Insurance Inc in 1964.  Doris resided in Durand until May of 2023 when she moved to the Baldwin Care Center in Baldwin, WI.

After raising 8 children, Doris returned to work as a chiropractor’s assistant for Dr. Brian Hurtgen and Dr. Douglas Jacot.  Doris was an active member of St. Mary’s Church and the Maria Mission Society.  She loved golfing, bowling, traveling, reading, painting, playing cards, gardening, quilting, playing piano, and spending time at their Florida home, but paramount in her life was spending time with her family.

Doris had a calm and patient presence complemented by her witty sense of humor.  She was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend.  She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Doris is survived by and became a dear friend to each of these children throughout the years: Kay (Bill Tedlie), Apple Valley, MN, Steve, Kansas City, MO, Pam Williams, Colfax, Randy (Cheri), Durand, Scott (Diane), Mondovi, Jeff (Jennifer), Cottage Grove, MN, and Becky (Al) Morrissey, Baldwin.  She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, Mary Lou Weiss, and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert, her siblings, Clarence (Mary) Brunner, Margaret (Fred) Bauer, Marian (Roman) Bauer, Sister M. Lola, Bernice (Robert) Traun, a son, Curtis Weiss, a son-in-law, Jim Williams, a great-granddaughter, Remy Picklo, and many friends.
