Kathleen I. “Kate” Herbison, age 83 of Ellsworth, formerly of Maiden Rock
Born: November 30, 1925
Died: October 29, 2009, at her home in Ellsworth, with daughters Pat and Ann, and son-in-law Mike at her side.
Kate was the daughter of Ira and Clara (Kerg) Smith. She was born in Red Wing, MN and grew up in Elmwood. Kate graduated from Elmwood High School in 1943. She then attended vocational school and had several occupations before she and her daughter Pat began running the Red Barn Country Store in Spring Valley for 25 years. Kate’s passions were her family, travelling, playing cards and the Green Bay Packers.
Kate married Erwin G. Herbison May 2 1969 in South Dakota. They made their home on a small farm in the Rush River Valley near Maiden Rock.
Kate is survived by her husband Erwin, her children, Robert J. “Bart” Crownhart of St. Paul, MN, Diane K. “Suzi” Crownhart of Luck, Pat Lynn Crownhart of Spring Valley, Ann L (Mike) McKernon of Owatonna, MN, Scott A. (Peggy) Crownhart of Red Wing, MN, Marta J. (Brian) Ender of Eau Claire, three step-children, Kathy Herbison of Spring Valley, Karen (Jim) Hoyt of Nikiski, AK, Ken (Carol) Sarnstrom, of Mellon, 18 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, two sisters, Mary Jean Gilles of St. Paul, MN, Virginia (Wayne) Spence of Redding CA, two brothers, Ira (Linda) Smith of Woodbury, MN and Willard (Gina) Smith of Sun City West, AZ. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Arlene Hill and her former husband, Robert Crownhart.
Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Tuesday November 3, 2009 at the Sacred Heart Cemetery-Farm Hill, rural Elmwood. Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM Monday at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand.
In lieu of flowers, memorial preferred to the American Cancer Society.
