Katherine M. Sweeney, 89, of Arkansaw

Date of Death: December 5, 2009 at Chippewa Valley Hospital in Durand

Katherine was born and raised in Arkansaw. She was the daughter of Fred and Mae (McGinnley) Markman. She graduated from Arkansaw High School in 1938. Katherine married Ovid Sweeney on January 7, 1939 at the Cathedral of St. Joseph’s in La Crosse. She worked as a nurse’s aide in Durand, Elmwood, Plum City, and Menomonie. Katherine also worked at the Durand Canning Company. She taught vocational classes through the Chippewa Valley Vocational School, teaching sewing, knitting, crocheting, and other arts and crafts. She also raised and sold grand champion rabbits to 4-H clubs and area supermarkets. Katherine was the last living person of her generation living in the Little Arkansaw Valley. She was a lifetime member of St. Henry’s Church in Eau Galle.

Katherine is survived by two daughters, Charlotte (Donald) Boigenzahn of Durand, Barbara (Gary) Hovde of Prescott, one son, George of St. Paul, Minnesota, 16 grandchildren, and several great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ovid, two daughters in infancy, one son, James, one brother, Charles Markman, one half brother, Gale Markman, and two great granddaughters.
