Magdalene Clara (Brantner) Bauer, age 86 of Durand, died Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Oakview Care Center in Durand.

Magdalene was born on March 31, 1927 in the town of Lima, Pepin County. She was the eldest child of Joseph and Mary (Prissel) Brantner. She married Leonard Joseph Bauer on June 12, 1945 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in the town of Lima. Leonard and Magdalene farmed in the town of Albany for 7 years and then in the town of Lima for 35 years until Leonard’s death in 1987. After Leonard’s death, Magdalene learned how to drive and got her driver’s license. Magdalene suffered a stroke in 2003 which left her with some challenges that ended her participation in some of her beloved activities. Those activities included gardening, needlework, dancing, traveling and singing in the Lima Polka Choir. Important cornerstones of her life were faith, family and friends. She lived in her own home until January of 2013, when she entered the care center.

Magdalene is survived by 5 children, Charlotte Byington of Durand, Garold (Ruth) Bauer of Colorado Springs, Dale (Debra) Bauer, Rosanne (Charles) Reckin, and Lana (Robert) Hayden, all of Durand. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Surviving siblings are Regina Rieck, Rosetta Nelson, Charles Brantner and JoAnn Rieck. Magdalene was preceded in death by her husband Leonard in 1987, daughter Shelly in 1992, son-in-law Robin Byington in 1997, her parents and two sisters, Mary Ann Brantner and Lorraine Smith.
