Paul A. Axelsen

Paul A. Axelsen age 87 of Menomonie, died Monday April 28, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health System-Menomonie.

Paul was born May 17, 1926 in Sparta, WI.  He was the son of Anders & Hazel (Meacham) Axelsen.  He attended grade school & high school in Sparta, graduating in 1944. Paul served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army Air Corps and was honorably discharged.  Paul received his B.S. Degree from Stout Institute in Industrial Education, Printing in 1950.  He spent a year at Ashbaugh Printing in Eau Claire before moving to Owatonna, MN where he was employed by Jostens, American Yearbook Division.  Paul married Beatrice Sagstetter September 15, 1951 at St. John Catholic Church in Plum City.  Paul worked for a short time teaching Printing at Pattengill Junior High in Lansing, MI.  In 1955, Paul returned to Stout where he received is Masters Degree.  While there the enrollment jumped and Paul was offered a teaching position in the Printing Department.

Sixteen years later Paul left the Printing Dept. and transferred to the Planning Area.  The Administration Building, Science & Technology Building, Child Study Building and several other projects were underway at the time.  Paul prepared Environmental Impact Studies, Administered the Relocation Law, and maintained the Room Inventory and other paper work required by Central Administration.  Paul worked at several newspapers and print shops before and after he was married.  He got his start in printing, using a foot pedal platen press at home that his father bought at an auction.  Paul worked for the Monroe County Democrat where they printed the “Real McCoy” paper for the Army stationed at Fort McCoy.  While there he learned to operate the Linotype machine.  Paul also worked printing jobs at Powell and Rawlins, WY.  While teaching at Stout, Paul spent several summers as “vacation help” at the Chronotype in Rice Lake and the Dunn County News in Menomonie.

Paul retired in 1987.  Paul & Bea spent 20 years wintering in Mesa, AZ and enjoying summers in Menomonie.  While in Mesa, Paul kept busy in the Lapidary and Silversmith shops making rings, earrings, and necklaces from silver and polished stones, many clocks were made from polished slabs of rock.  In 1977 Paul & Bea moved from their all electric ranch house and terraced back yard to a condo in Wellington Estates for easier living.  In the fall of 2012, Paul and Bea moved into the Comforts of Home Assisted Living.

Paul is survived by his wife Beatrice;  son, Anders “Andy” (Kari) of Temple, TX; three grandsons, Aaron, Adam and Alec; two sisters-in-law, Berniece Marte and Emily Axelsen, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.  He is preceded in death by his parents and a brother Dick in 2005 and a sister in infancy.

Paul and Bea were so thoughtful and kind during our father's struggling with Alzheimer's Disease. That was way back in the Early 80's. It appears they were rewarded with a long a happy life, that they richly deserved. We haven't seen them much, since we no longer live near Menomonie, but it was sad to hear of his passing. Our sympathy to Bea and all the Axelsen Family.

I won't be able to attend his service since I'm still down in Florida but my thought and prayers are with all of you.

  5. Joe Peterson

My sincere condolences to Mr. Axelson's family.
Paul was one of my instructors in the printing department at Stout. He was also a favorite instructor He taught linotype to me and did a very thorough job for such a complicated machine. He understood every nuance and sound it made. His quiet, pleasant personality made it easy to learn from him. I took much of what I learned on to teaching printing at a high school in Michigan.
    Rest in peace, Mr. Axelson!

Our family is grateful that Paul was here. Decades ago
[I am old enough to recall in decades] Paul/Bee were
beneficial for my parents, Bert & Ellen Sperstad, while
the Axelsons & my folks were in Menomonie. two/three decades later Paul/Bee were beneficial for three of my siblings, Phyllis, Omer/Joe & Marlowe, while the Axelsons were in Arizona. Over the years in Menomonie
my personal contact was mostly with Paul with the same
beneficial pattern. Paul/Bee moved the world a little bit in the right direction.

I was a student at Stout from 1958-63 majoring in Industrial Education with a Printing major. I had Paul as an instructor for several courses and also Paul was the advisor to the Stoutonia -- and I worked with him as I was the Production Manager for the paper for a year and we spent allot of time especially on Thursday evenings putting the paper to bed and then printing it in time for the students on Friday morning. I especially remember talking with Paul on a Thursday evening just before Christmas in 1960 about my plans to get engaged at Christmas. We had a great conversation and he asked me several questions about why I wanted to get married and also inquired about my future wife. I had a change to see Paul again last summer when I was at Stout for the IGAEA convention -- it was good to see and talk to him again. RIP Paul!
