Bernard J. Schlumpf, age 95 of Durand

Born: May 29, 1912

Died: May 25, 2008 at the Plum City Care Center in Plum City

Bernard was the son of Joseph and Orma (Hansemann) Schlumpf. He was born and raised in Durand. He attended Durand High School. After high school he worked in the family hardware store in Plum City until 1931. Bernard moved to California in 1932. While in California he was trained as a meat cutter and he returned to Durand where he set up a meat department at Bill Gilmore’s grocery store. In 1940 Bernard enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre of War during WW II. Bernard married Eileen Vogel of Arcadia in 1942. Following WW II, he and his wife moved to Canada where they owned and operated a resort on Lake Superior. His wife Eileen died in December 1954. Bernard continued to run the resort until 1971. In 1969 Bernard married Lucille Brunner. His wife Lucille died in February 2001. In the fall of 2007, Bernard moved to the Plum City Care Center where he remained the rest of his life.

Bernard is survived by two sisters, Wanda Klecker of Ellsworth, Joan Caselius of Richfield, MN, many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Eileen, his second wife, Lucille, an infant sister, Lois and a brother, Joseph.
