The family and friends of Jeanne Marie Hoeser will celebrate her life of caring, friendship, cheerfulness, and determination on Wednesday July 9, 2008 at an 11 a.m. service at the Rhiel Funeral Home in Durand, Wisconsin. Chaplain Stephanie Peterson will officiate. Jeanne, 59, died on Thursday July 3, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Jeannie was born November 13, 1948, in Shell Lake, Wisconsin to Ronald C. Scalzo and Margaret M. DePolis Scalzo. She grew up in Spooner and Eau Claire, Wisconsin. She attended St. Francis de Sales Catholic Grade School in Spooner and there formed a life-long bond with the nuns. This is also when Jeannie developed a love of dolls and she collected them all her life, her most recent one ‘adopted’ on an Alaskan trip taken less than a year ago. Jeannie graduated from Servite High School in Ladysmith, Wisconsin, and then attended Eau Claire Beauty College where she earned her beautician’s license. She worked for over 22 years at Orville’s House of Beauty. Jeannie really had a way with ‘her ladies’ and each became a friend as well as a client.
Jeannie liked spending time with her friends and relatives. An outing with Jeannie always involved discovering just how many people she knew. She had friends tucked away in unexpected places. People gathered around her wherever she went – her cheerfulness and friendliness were infectious and a joy to anyone who knew her. Jeannie was an active member of the singing group, Sweet Adelines, for over 20 years. She enjoyed the singing, friendships, and competitions. Jeannie found a like-minded spouse in Fred Hoeser, whom she married on May 18, 2002. Fred had sung in the Eau Claire Male Chorus for years and together they traveled the country to attend theater organ concerts and other musical events. Jeannie was a movie buff, and some of her favorite movies were musicals.
In addition to travels to pursue music events, Jeannie and Fred traveled to Switzerland several times, Austria, Australia, England, and throughout the United States. Most of these trips involved train travel, a particular interest of Jeannie and Fred’s. One of Jeannie’s favorite activities was taking out their railway motorcar on the track south of Durand.
Jeannie loved children and had a special place for them in her heart. She loved playing with her nieces as they grew up, and then their children and her sister’s grandchildren. Being a child at heart herself, she would get right down on the floor and play along with them, having a wonderful time.
Besides her loving husband, Fred, Jeannie is survived by her mother, Margaret DePolis of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, her brother William (Annette) Kempke of Rochester, Minnesota, and her sister Patti Scalzo (Michael) Welch of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Her father preceded her in death. Many relatives and friends too numerous to mention will miss Jeannie’s smile, cheerfulness, and fun-loving nature. Jeannie has brightened our lives and we will miss her dearly.
Please join the family for the visitation and celebration of Jeannie’s life from 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Rhiel Funeral Home, 615 12th Ave. E in Durand, Wisconsin, or an hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will immediately follow the service at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Durand.
